Hypnosis for fear of flying.

The vacation is booked or there is a business trip in your calendar, and weeks before you are already sleeping badly. You know flying is safe, but your body does not listen. You can change that, often in three sessions.

“I know it makes no sense, but I am still afraid.”

Fear cannot be reasoned away. It lives in an automatic reaction that was learned at some point, sometimes in one moment, sometimes gradually. As long as that reaction is there, no logical argument helps.
Maybe you have avoided flying for years. Maybe you do fly, but with pills, a drink or days of tension. Or you say no to trips and opportunities you would actually love to take.

Back to where it started.

In hypnosis we find out where your fear began. Then you teach your subconscious a new response, so you stay calm when it matters. Not years of treatment, but a short and focused program.

What changes.

01
You think about your trip without your stomach tightening
02
You sleep through the nights before you leave
03
You board with calm instead of tension

Also for fear of driving and other fears.

The same approach works for fear of driving, fear of failure or nerves before an important moment, such as a presentation or an exam. Not sure whether your fear fits? Just ask in the intro call.

What fear of flying can look like.

Fear of flying isn't the same for everyone. For one person it's about turbulence, for another it's the closed door. These are forms I work with.

Fear of turbulence

Every bump feels like a sign that something is wrong. You grip the armrests, listen to every sound the engines make and watch the faces of the flight attendants. Your thoughts about turbulence often start while you're still at home. We work on how your body reacts, so a bump can simply be a bump again.

Letting go of control

You're not at the wheel, you can't just pull over and you don't know exactly what's happening in the cockpit. For people who are used to being in charge, that's sometimes the hardest part. In hypnosis, you learn to trust without having to oversee everything.

Feeling trapped

As soon as the door closes, the cabin feels smaller. A full row, a narrow seat, no way out. That suffocating feeling can be stronger than the fear of flying itself. Together we find out where it comes from, so your body can breathe calmly in that space again.

The lead-up to your trip

Sometimes the flight itself isn't even the problem. It's the weeks before: the drive to the airport, the line at security, the wait at the gate. Your body has been on high alert long before you board. We work on that whole lead-up, so your trip can start calmly at home.

After a bad flight

Maybe you flew for years without a problem, until that one flight with heavy turbulence or an unexpected landing. Since then, things have been different. A moment like that can lodge itself deep inside. In hypnosis, we go back to that experience and give it a place, so it no longer shapes every flight.

Business travel

Your work requires you to fly, to a client, a trade show or an office abroad. You go, but it costs you days of tension and you arrive exhausted for the meeting that actually matters. Or you keep canceling trips like that. Here too, we work on calm, so you arrive feeling fresh.

I know how much travel can matter.

My family lives in Bali. So I know what it's like when the people you love live on the other side of the world. Flying isn't a luxury then, it's how you get to be together. When fear takes that away from you, you miss more than a vacation. You miss birthdays, weddings and ordinary days together.
For others, it's about work. I spent years as the right hand of a director, and I know how often a trip ends up on the calendar without you really choosing it. You don't want to sleep badly for days beforehand. You want to get on the airplane, do your job and head home again. That's what I help you with.

Tailored to you, not out of a book.

I work with Ericksonian, conversational hypnosis. There's no fixed script for fear of flying, because your fear isn't someone else's. One person is startled by sounds, another by the closed door. I've learned a wide range of techniques and use them with intention, tailored to what you feel. Every person already has inner resources, like the calm you feel when someone you trust is driving. Those are unconscious and not always easy to reach. In hypnosis, I help you find them and take them on board with you.

Why your body reacts differently than your mind.

Your rational mind knows the facts. You know airplanes are built to handle turbulence and that pilots deal with it every day. Still, that doesn't help much, because fear lives in a different part of your system. Your nervous system reacts faster than you can think. A bump, a strange noise or a change in the engine sound, and your body braces itself before your mind can form an opinion about it.
After that, a loop often starts. You feel your heart beating faster, you notice it, and that makes you even more afraid. You start looking for confirmation: do the flight attendants look relaxed, did I hear something weird, how much longer is this going to take? The more you watch for signs of danger, the more of them you find. That isn't you being dramatic. It's your body doing its very best to protect you, just at the wrong moment.
For many people, the lead-up is harder than the flight itself. The images start weeks in advance. You put off booking, look for the shortest route or end up taking the car after all. That's how your subconscious learns that flying is dangerous, because why else would you avoid it? Avoiding it feels like relief, but in the long run it makes the fear bigger.
Every person already has the ability to trust without managing everything themselves. You get on a train without knowing the engineer. You sleep in a house someone else built. So that trust is already there, just not on the airplane. In hypnosis, you make that connection. That's how you learn to let go of control in a place where you couldn't before.

What you can expect from me.

I'm not a medical professional and I don't cure anything. Hypnosis is a complement to, never a replacement for, your doctor or psychologist. Before we start, I'll send you a short questionnaire, including questions about any medication you take. Do you take something to calm down before a flight? Keep discussing that with your doctor, and don't stop taking it on your own.
Along with fear of flying, do you also have panic attacks in other situations, or is something deeper going on medically? Then I'll ask for a referral letter from your doctor, so we can work with care. I don't offer EMDR. I work with hypnosis and conversation, and you set the pace.

Online, wherever you live.

I'm based in the Netherlands and work mostly online, with people all over the world, in English or Dutch. You need a quiet place and a pair of headphones, nothing more. That also makes it a good fit if you live abroad, for example because you moved for work and keep having to fly to see family back home.
Prefer to meet in person? That can be arranged. I'm not strict about it: in the intro call, we'll look together at what works best for you.

Questions about hypnosis for fear of flying.

How do I get over my fear of flying?
Not by forcing yourself or trying to think about it as little as possible. Fear of flying is a learned reaction of your nervous system. In hypnosis, we look at where that reaction started and you teach your subconscious a new response. That way the fear changes where it actually lives, instead of you having to keep pushing it down.
Yes, for many people with a fear of flying, turbulence is the moment things go wrong. We work on what your body does when there's a bump or a strange noise, and on the thoughts that follow. The goal isn't to feel nothing at all, but for a bump to no longer sweep you away.
No. You're deeply relaxed and fully aware the whole time, and you decide how far we go. We work from calm, not from the fear. That way you notice what it's like to think about your flight without your body reacting right away.
A single session of about 60 minutes is possible. For fear of flying, I still recommend the program with three sessions, because that gives you time to build up the new feeling. Is your flight coming up very soon? Get in touch, and we'll see what's possible.
A little tension is fine, even after the sessions. The difference is that it no longer sweeps you along. In the sessions, you learn how to bring yourself back to calm. Between sessions, you can reach me on WhatsApp or by email, including if you have a question about your upcoming trip.
Yes. On a long flight, part of it is often that you can't get off for hours and that you have to sleep in a space where you don't feel safe. We work on that feeling of being stuck and on the calm you need to relax along the way. Whether you're flying to Spain or to the other side of the world, the approach is the same.
Usually three. Sometimes two is enough, sometimes more is needed. We review after every session.
Yes. How long you have had the fear says little about how quickly it changes.
Ideally six weeks before. That gives time for three sessions and to experience the result.
Yes. All sessions are online, in English or Dutch.
